cloud computing

my company was looking into getting a share point server, but then along came the "cloud". from the things i've seen about it - wouldn't cloud computing / sharing be just about what sharepoint would do - sharing and collaborating documents.

"Cloud" is such a vague term now.  What exactly do you mean by cloud computing?

SharePoint itself can be "in the cloud".  Hosted SharePoint environments are a very popular choice, espcially for small companies.  The upcoming version of SharePoint online is available via Office 365 and has many improvements over the current SharePoint online product.

i'm sorry, i forgot about office 365 - isn't that an example of "cloud" computing. so for a fee - you sign up for office 365 - and not needing to add a server - you have the capabilities of sharepoint - or whatever else you want out of the office suite.

Yes office 365 is in the cloud, it's a hosted environment.  One of it's offerings is SharePoint.  You don't need any additional servers on site.
