can it be overheating? then install speefan to monitor : http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

The most likely thing is that you need to adjust your power savings settings on the computer in Control Panel. Watching a movie doesn't register as "activity" to the system so if you are set to Sleep or Hibernate after an hour that would typically cut you off half way thorught the movie.

You can change the power savings settings or every 30-40 minutes move the mouse around or click the keyboard etc. to restart the timer.

Thanks for your reply nobus:

It only takes between 2 to 5 minutes to shutdown so I don't think it would be the power saver settings.  Remember it seems to work with IE8 but not with Firefox.  The link you sent me seems promising; it might need cleaning.  This is a friend's machine and she has pets and dander around the house so I will try to clean it out with compressed air.

I'll let you know if that works.

if it is a laptop, best open it to clean it
if you blow the air into the vents, the dust will accumulate inside the laptop
