Backup Exec 2010 Updating Catalogs Slow

I use Backup Exec to back up Exchange 2003 Enterprise.  Both my backup server and mail server are running Windows 2003 Enterprise 32 bit.

My information store is about 350 GB.  The backup job takes aproximately 4 hours with 2.5 hours being the updating catalogs portion.  Is there anyway to reduce the amount of time this task takes?

I have 11d, but see if this still applies to 2010

go to C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec and run BEutility.exe, click yes to the warning msg about only using it with support

select your media server on the right

now scroll down towards dabase task section

try a check, compact or repair on the db.

your db might be getting too large or corrupt and just needs some maintenance.

I remember calling support a long while back because of some similar db issues and this is what they recommended to do.

There are probably a few issues impacting you. First, after the backups are completed, i'd restart the servr, run disk cleanup, delete old dumo files and temp folders, defrag and perform a general cleaning of the system. Make sure you have at least 4 gigs of ram on the server and run Windows update and Live update in Backup Exec.

If you are backing up to a slow drive, this wil definately lengthen the backup process. If this is a B2D configuration, make sure you exclude the backup location in your anti virus application.

Post your backup stats after running this process.
