I ran updates on windows SBS 2008 and receive the following error for updates that fail:

Some Updates were not installed

Succeeded: 2 Updates
Failed: 1 Update

Code 42D Windows update encountered an unknown error.

Windows can't update important files and services while the system is using them. Save any open files, and then restart the Computer.

The update failing is: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706). this update has been failing for over 3 months now, how can  this be fixed ?

The way I would do  it is to browse the net to the appropriate KB article, download the file and install it manually.  Some updates just don't seem to want to install automatically regardless of Server or Desktop, and it seems very random.

I have found that some 3rd-party apps make assumptions about a windows server and don't actually check file locations, so they clobber tome IIS settings. While the article was written for the now dead EBS product, I've seen where the solution applies to SBS as well in cases where a 3rd-party app has made changes that cause the update to fail.

1) Make a backup.

2) Follow the steps in the document below for the "management" server (the security server steps can be skipped)

http://blogs.technet.com/b/essentialbusinessserver/archive/2009/05/06/sql-2005-sp-3-kb-955706-fails-to-install-on-the-ebs-management-server.aspx

3) Test RWW, OWA, SBS monitoring and reportiong, and other IIS features you may be using. If problems now exist, restore your backup.
