Trouble with sound playback

I have no sound playback coming from speakers.  My sound card is not recognized in Sounds and Audio Device Properties> Audio tab> Sound playback.  "No Playback device"
Here is my troubleshooting process so far:
Tried updating the driver, Update driver had the best update available
Tried rollback driver, It wouldn't rollback cause there was no rollback point
Uninstalled the devices in hardware manager> the Sigmatel c-major and Kernel sys audio device> restarted computer
Downloaded the driver> ran and installed> checked audio device properties: No Playback Devices

The PC is a Laptop Latitude 610 with Win XP profess service pak 2.  Sound card SigmaTel C-Major 975X v. with STAC 975X AC97 driver.  I couldn't find the motherboard info without taking the casing off.

Check you have the Intel chipset drivers correctly installed. (You may need to reinstall the audio driver afterwards).

If that doesn't help do you have access to a bootable Linux CD such as Knoppix?  A bootable environment that's not Windows will test whether your hardware is working OK or not or if this is just a Windows problem.
