I usually recommend separating the data from the os/programs. That way you do a file based sync fr the dataand only have to full backup the os/programs.
10tb is going to take awhile. What is your backup media and connectiontype?

I think they use a Disk backup and high speed ethernet or fiber SAN.

I thought the industry standard is to take an IMAGE COPY of the server weekly so if server dies or crashes we get another server and restore the image. The daily backups are incremental for files added every day.

I thought there is image disk software the can do terabytes in a few hours.

You must have the partitions and then try to backup the entire harddrive once
Use any of the harddisk imaging software. I am using Acronis drive image
It clones the harddrive and have options of complete backup and incremental backup

If your data in other partitions is not changing you need to take a complete backup once and then you can continue with the incremental backup which would be of few hundred MB only

Acronis and ghost are image based solutions. Backupexec, retrospect, emc, are non-image based backup solutions. These are good if you need versioning. If you don't need multiple copies as files change, something as simple as Syncback will work.

does acronis have server version for solaris machines too? I thought that was for PCs and windows.

so is it normal to take couple of days to create a 10 TB image. It seems those image programs can do 1 GB per minute.

you can try the server version and choose the option of sector by sector
It helps
better test it before choosing it as an option

but there is no benchmarks on how long it takes on average to disk image or backup 10 TB of data.

there is got be something in the industry that can do this quickly instead of spending 2 days per week.

Software won't matter. Your limited by hardware.

so hardware is what really makes teh difference in how fast a backup can take?

Is not better to do one time full and differentials instead of one full every week.

It is good to do a full backup weekly but I think we need to look at the hardware involved in your 10tb copy. Software will not have much of an effect on copying that much data as a full backup. Only rsync or something that does a differential based backup can affect speed. I think your copying over Ethernet which just takes that long. You can link aggregate and other stuff to help if thats the case.
