Connecting two internal networks together

Hi all,

I have two routers both with two different networks.

I'd like to be able to be on one network (wirelessly) and connect to the other network's files.

I found it hard to explain the setup so I made a short video demonstrating the setup. I'd appreciate your help in figuring this setup out.

Usually, this is not a terribly difficult exercise.  Simply join the two routers together with a third network.  You may have to tinker with the DNS server for each of the end-user networks so that name resolution works across the routers.
to my mind you will need to configure the firewall on wifi 2's router to allow the ports through to wifi 1

I am using this device http://www.smc.com/files/AY/DS_WEBT_G.pdf to bring in the Wifi from wifi1 to wifi2.

I have acces to a third roouter if needed but wiring the other two routers into it won't be practicle.

Is there any way I can change current settings to allow for this? Changing DNS settings sure - but do I have enough equipment as it stands to do this? If so can you help with an article on how to set this up?

What if you were to use the Netgear simply as a combo switch / access point and put everything on the 192.168.1.x network served by the zyxel? Turn off the DHCP in the Netgear and move the SMC connection from the WAN port on the Netgear to one of the LAN ports. If you have a static IP on the NAS it would need to be changed to be on the 192.168.1.x network - but in the end all is one logical network connected together by your SMC Wireless bridge.

Yeah that would be an option but can I still use netgear as a wireless network also in it's own right?
You should be able to just fine. It is a broadband router with a built in AP. On those devices the Wired ports and the Wireless LAN devices are bridged onto the same layer 2 network. This is evidenced by how presently your Wireless iPad devices pull an IP address on the same range as the wired NAS device and connects to it over the internal bridge in the routher. It is a single layer 2 network with two media types (wired ethernet and wireless).

I personally use Linksys in my home network but suspect they all work much the same. I use my domain controller as the DHCP server for the network and turn off DHCP in in the Wireless routers - and both wired and wireless devices connected to a router pull DHCP addresses from my Windows DC on running on VMware and only connected to the Linksys by virtue of a Linksys LAN port being uplinked to my central switch.

Having spent the last 2 hours trying to get this going, without luck, I am still back to the original setup.

Here's what I did:

Taking the Netgear I switched off DHCP on it and assigned the netgeat an IP number and on the Zyxel I assigned netgear that number.

Plugging the SMC into a LAN port on the NetGear (NG) I then connected up a PC to the NG into a port. The PC was assigned an IP 169.254.X.X telling me it never reveived an IP number from the original router (zyxel).

I looked at the Zyxel DNS IP and it was set as if that is of any bearing.

Don't assign the netgear an IP address as it is only acting as a switch for the proposed configuration. All of the "routing" functions will be taking place on the zyxel device. The WAN port on the NG shouldn't even be connected to anything. All of the client devices connected to either the zyxel or the NG should be either static, or pulling information from the dhcp on the zyxel. Nothing will be pointing to the NG for a gateway or DNS any longer. Visualize the Netgear as if was a dumb switch with an access point plugged into it, then uplinked to the LAN side of the zyxel, but instead of a cable uplink it is a wireless uplink through the SMC bridge.

When complete you will have a single layer 2 network on Everything will have a default gateway of and will use whatever DNS servers you use when in the room with the zyxel.

If you must assign IP addresses to the NG make them static and on an unused network as we will not be needing them. For example set the WAN side to static and set the LAN side to The NG will be doing no routing nor will it be doing any DHCP functions so you don't want to give it any IP address that will conflict with the 192.168.1.x network.

I believe I am configuring everything correctly but still no joy with this. I do have a wrt54g from linksys which I could use for this.
You might try the Linksys - I haven't used the Netgear, but have used the Linksys for something similar (installed DD-WRT on the Linksys and used it as Wireless bridge to connect XBox, DirecTV Receiver, etc. in game cabinet to my network). All you should really need is a switch in the office room.

I would say when uplinking the LAN port through the SMC you would NOT use whatever option on the router to avoid having a crossover ethernet cable as you would for a cable uplink to another switch. Various devices handle it different - some have two jacks for the last port, one to use as uplink, the other for LAN. Others have a push button by the port where one setting is for uplink, the other for normal LAN port. Still others adapt automatically (it can tell if it is plugged into another switch or into a computer).

In your case using the SMC bridge for an uplink would always use the LAN mode instead of the Uplink mode.

Especially for those devices that have two jacks for one port you must make sure there aren't  devices plugged into both of them.
