I keep users logged in to my site with sessions (PHP).

On mobile web-apps the browser stops communicating with the server as soon as the user returns to the homescreen so the session expires, even though the browser is still open in the background (on devices capable of multi-tasking).

How can I keep a user logged in, securely? Encrypted cookies?
