I would suggest you to check PGP ( powered by Symantec ).
They have different solutions and one of them is the PGP Desktop that allows you to use local passphrases or validate by RADIUS on you Active Directory.

I have been using it on my Customer's computer park and also on my laptop and the cpu consumption and startup/logoff times optimal.

If you are using Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption this Site might be of interest.

On regards to your question, you might want to check this Site too.

Most drawbacks are processor-consuming and risk of losing the passphrase/key to decrypt the drive, which renders it unrecoverable..
