DR and Amazon EC2

Is anyone doing this? So to have a DR ready on Amazon, we would need to purchase dup licenses of everything? (windows, backup software etc, exchange).

I was curious if it is smart to setup DR here and if costs are better or the same with a co lo.

Our clients are using Cloud Switch to move/copy virtual machines to Amazon EC2 for DR purposes.

Amazon EC2 is less expensive than Co Lo, because you only pay for what you use. So you only pay Amazon, when you enact a DR situation, with Co Lo, you are paying from the moment, you host your DR servers at the facility.

As for Microsoft License, it depends on what licensing you have in place. If you have Software Assurance, you may be able to use existing licensing at the DR site, but if you have OEM software license you cannot transfer these to a DR site.

Some organisations, have made interprtations, that because you are not using both licenses, this is okay. I would contact Microsoft Licensing to check on your situation.

No Cloudswitch provide, easy software to move to the Cloud. (or you could use Amazon's for free)

As for costs, you would need to approach them, because it depends on your size.
