Auto Shutdown UPS Suggestion

Currently i am having IBM x3650 (7979KXG) and i am looking for a UPS compatible with our server which has some feature where if the power goes off and after a period of time the server should be properly shutdown automatically. There is a POWER CHUTE from APC but i don't know the exact model and the pricing and i am not sure if it is compatible with x3650. Please give me your suggestions. Thank you.

The power chute software is normally for windows, not the specific hardware. So as long you have the windows software (or whatever OS is on it), you should be okay. Power chute just monitors the UPS via the COMM port (or network) and can do various things, like shut down the computer... Just make sure you all enough time for a clean shutdown... and don't forget:

Set the computer BIOS to power on automatically.
Set the UPS to wait 1-2 mintues after power is restored to energize the UPS outlets.

Alright one more thing, the POWER CHUTE ,is it free ? and i read somewhere that it should be connected with the network which is behind the UPS i mean the UPS should be network based. Is it true ?

The basic Power Chute is free. It most likely comes with your UPS. If you have a network based UPS, you can also use Power Chute shutdown on your other windows-based server so everything powers off neatly.

The only version you have to pay for is the ESX version for some reason.

Simplify Active Directory Administration

Administration of Active Directory does not have to be hard.  Too often what should be a simple task is made more difficult than it needs to be.The solution?  Hyena from SystemTools Software.  With ease-of-use as well as powerful importing and bulk updating capabilities.

Yes, I have found it much easier to use. I think you still need to hook it up to a COM port to do the initial configuration, but once you have an IP set up, you can do everthing over the network.

APC Smart-UPS SC 1500VA 120V - 2U Rackmount/Tower

I got the pricing for this one and it looks suitable. Shall i go ahead with it for POWER CHUTE ?

I am asking because the reviews are not so good for this one and the another pricing i have recieved is for APC Smart-UPS 1500VA USB & Serial 120V

I used that earlier but never used POWER CHUTE, it has USB port if  i can attach with the server ,will it support ?

Power Chute is a suite of products. However if you want to be able to manage the UPS over the network, you will need to purchase a UPS with a network card.

Note this is really only required if you are powering multiple servers from the UPS. If its always going to be a single server on the UPS, you can use the free powerchute software that comes with all APC UPS.

As for that specific model, it sounds good. As long as it gives you the amount of runtime you desire and can handle what you are connecting, it should be fine. I did find anything negative, but always look at what the reviewer didn't like and see if it is important to you.
