Vmware converter standalone 4.3.0 / P2V desktop serves
Hi Experts,
I will be doing P2V of few server and desktops to virtual environment.
I am not being too careful about desktops but I also need to P2V a Domain Controller ( I know that It is not an good excersice. I know but we need to have an Virtual version of DC. )
I will install VMware converter standalone & VMware workstation 7 on XP pro desktop or windows server ( don't think doesn't matter much ) then I will hot clone the DC.
At this point , I need some advance feed back as to what I shouldbe be careful about.
- Firewall is already off
- i read one article in which it says to turn off basic file sharing ? is it necessary ?
- should be conect to same network ( no same IPs )
- at least same amount of Disk, RAM as the source one
for the time being I am just going to create an VM out of an DC.( Again, my problem is not regarding strategy of how best practice ). But I am just trying to understand what kind of problems I might be having during converting a DC.
I haven't had any issue any P2V i have done back .
love to hear some feedback that could save me uncesesaary troubleshooting
Regards

Hi
Like my friend hanccocka just added above, is better, easy and safer to create a new VM promote to a DC and move/migrate the Roles if you want that DC hold all the Roles.
This is easy that just P2V a physical DC. But still you want P2V that DC, never do that online. For this you need to do a cold migration(server off). Because doing a hot migration, will bring you many issues with that DC in the future and of course some incompatibilities on your AD.

So turn if off, and then P2V, start new DC (virtual), and never start the old one again.
