How are underscores treated in SharePoint (MOSS 2007) Search

Why does a Basic Search we execute in SharePoint (MOSS 2007) for "_1234" return the file named "Test 1234.doc" (no underscore)?  (The content of the file does not contain _1234)  I had read that the underscore is not treated as a delimiter, but these search results contradict that.  Can you provide a definitive rule for how the underscore is treated in SharePoint 2007 Search?

My understanding is that the indexer does not look at any special characters. This also happens in SharePoint 2010 as noted from my own servers and below:

I couldn't find anything right off the bat from Microsoft, but I can confirm that the special characters are ignored in keyword searches. Custom and 3rd party filters that query lists and document libraries do accept these, so it seems to be more of a design of the indexer and other search components.
