Network Error related to network switches ?
Hi Experts,
I have a problem regarding our local network setup. We had a power outage recently, which i think may have caused the network DLINK switched to act funny.
We are running win sbs 2k3, on the server i can browse the internet but on all the network computers i can not.
on all the other computer thei get the following ip config:
Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.77.165
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
Certain comps and the server are on the same switch but only the server works.
Now one of the switches i have a dlink wireless router attached to it and the wireless works fine all the comps can connect wirelessly.
The Network switches are:
2 x DES - 1218R
DES - 1226G
Server and wireless router works fine off these switches but not the network computers
Please help me i don't know much about switches or how to trouble shoot this problem any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and thanks for the response
DHCP is already enabled and configured, its only after the power outage the computers have been playing funny buggers.

try configuring static ip on 2-3 computers, if its works ok if not than restart your switches.

just to let you know i checked the win sbs 2k3 services, and dhcp was service not running so i enabled it restarted the server and the comps.
Now all the computers pick up their correct ips, subnet and and dhcp, but they still cant connect to the net. Nor can i access other server shared folders etc.....
I cant ping computer dns names or computer IPs from server to computer either. But from the computers i can ping server IP address.
Any ideas on this would be awesome!!

check DNS service?
for feature go to servicses.msc, make sure AD, DNS, GHCP services set to auto.

Also before the power outage everything was working fine shares and internet access.
go to cmd, type nslookup dcname, and check the outputs. its hould be similer to this
Server: yourdc-01.yourdomainname
Address: DCIP
Name: yourdc-01.yourdomainname
Address: DCIP
if not, then check DNS settings in your host, your DNS server should be primary in DNS TAB.

In your dhcp settings what do the users get as their DNS server (do an ipconfig /all). Compare this to the Server as this is working ok.

option 1:
configure DHCP server in one of your SBS-2003 server and enable. in your DHCP scope make sure to configure proper IP scheme, gateway and DNS.
Option 2:
use static ip address for your clinets, make sure you can ping server. once done you should be able to browse.
may i ask what ip range you are using, private range ?
lets say if you server ip is
IP 192.168.1.1, 255.255.255.0
Subnet 255.255.255.0
GW 192.168.1.254
DNS x.x.x.x
your host should be
IP 192.168.1.x, 255.255.255.0
Subnet 255.255.255.0
GW 192.168.1.254
DNS : primary DNs Server
Secondry DNS server
