I started a fresh 4 web application project and debugged then tried to register as a user
and I could. I haven't even added a backend database. Where are users stored in this instance or do I need to still add a database for this to work online?

Yes you will need some backend database before going online. When you simple register the user it actually does not persist and will remain in memory. There is also builten Membership providers which you can use for user registration. You can also use builten User Registration wizard control in ASP.Net.

Kindly see following link for more detail.

Thanks malikirfan28 but I still don't understand what a membership provider is. If I am going to add an SQL backend, do I need to add a table for this or is that already there in a fresh project?
