Which SQL license will I need?

We have SharePoint Foundation setup with SQL Express which limits the size of our database. We will need to purchase a SQL license to allow our database to grow. However, I am not sure which license I would need.

sql server 2008 standard with 5cals should work for you,

Would 5 cals work if I have 30 people logged in at the same time? Thanks for your help.

If they are all logged in at the same time you will need 30 CALS.  There is a break-even price, where it's cheaper to go per processor instead of buying CALS.

I have 5 sql server 2005 cals and and never had a problem with concurrent users with sharepoint -only thing you need to do is make sure its using one connection string for all users

NormanMaina, you're violating Microsoft licensing if you only have 5 CALS and more than 5 concurrent users.  As a matter of fact, the Microsoft licensing documents also state that attempting to do any kind of connection pooling to get around buying the proper number of CALS is a violation of your license.

There is no license metering in SQL 2005 and above so it won't stop you if you try to use more than you bought.

Please get license of Full Version (Standard, Professional). Avoid Express version.
