No mailboxes in Exchange 2010 recovery database

I'm trying to recover a couple of Exchange 2010 mailboxes from backup and I'm not having any luck.  Prior to crashing hard, the server was backed up with WIndows Server Backup.  I rebuilt the server with the same name, restored the database to a temp location, ran Eseutil to replay the logs and get it consistent, and mounted the database.  However, when I run Get-MailboxStatistics -Database on the recovery database, it returns nothing--no mailboxes at all.

The DB is 3.5GB, so I know that SOMETHING is in there.  I just can't get to it.  Can anyone help?  Did I miss some critical step in recovery?

Does anything show with get-mailbox on that DB? Have you tried extracting data from it with EMC\Toolbox--> DB recovery?

Nothing shows when I run a get-mailbox on the database.  I checked my EMC\Toolbox but there's no DB Recovery option there.

FYI I also tried an application recovery using Windows Server Backup but received this error:

Status - Component recovery failed to complete
Error - The application extension plugin failed to perform the pre-recovery steps for the component.

The steps in link 1 are exactly what I did.  However when I do a get-mailboxstatistics on the recovery database, there is nothing there.

I actually used link 2 as a reference while trying to restore this database.  Again, in step 7 when I do a get-mailboxstatistics, I see nothing.

One more thing.  I tried Stellar Phoenix Mailbox Recovery (suggested on Petri.co.il) and I was able to see the mailboxes.  So the data is there, I just for some reason can't get to it through Exchange.  I can't spend $600 on MER so I really need to get this going through Exchange native tools.
try a trial version of a 3rd party product and see if it can see anything in that DB:
http://www.filesland.com/companies/Nucleus-Data-Recovery/Exchange-EDB-Recovery.html $USD 299
(trial lets you see the recoverable items)

http://www.kerneldatarecovery.com/buy-edb-email-recovery.html  $USD 400 -->$USD 500
(Recommended)
oops, I didn't refresh the page, so didn't see your last comment...
Does Windows Server backup log anything in the event logs when the error occurs? You may need to reboot your server to reset VSS.

Another method for you to try:

The server has been rebooted multiple times and the restore has been attempted multiple times.  Here's what I see in the event log:

The operation to recover component(s) 'ee75b29e-8dc4-4627-bf08-03d8c6584bdf' has failed with errors at '¿2011¿-¿04¿-¿26T17:32:07.534000000Z'. Error reported '2155348057'(No components were recovered.). Please review the event details for solutions, and then rerun the recovery operation once the issue is resolved.

The method in that link is pretty much the same thing as the second link in your earlier post.  No mailboxes are listed when I do a get-mailbox or get-mailboxstatistics so I can't do a recovery.
Did you lose the whole of AD too or just Exchange? Did you use 'setup /RecoverServer' to reinstall Exchange?

AD was lost.
That is probably the reason why you can't restore the DB / not see any objects in it.

Did you install Exchange with the same Org name etc?
I am having the same issue on a mailstore recovered using MS DataProtection Manager 2010 to a different Exchange Server in a different domain.  Supposedly this will work but so far no dice.
Get-MailboxStatistics just returns nothing although the file is 30GB and reports mounted clean.
New-MailboxRstoreRequest cannot find mailboxes either....
