Windows 7 + WDS +WAIK tools +SysyPrep

Hi - I have a question reagrding preparing a Windows 7 Master Image for deployment using WDS and WAIK tools for an unattended installation.

My WDS is ready and I have an Unattended answer file which I have created using WAIK.

The question is when I run Sysprep and use the WDS to capture the image and then deplay the same image using WDS and answer file.

I notice that some of the changes I orignally made to the Master image are no loger there.

For Example when I make Google the Home page or I pin something to the task bar - its no longer there in the deployed image. However, when I created the image I did do the above.

Is Sysprep remving all my custom settings ???? .

Regards
Asad

Those are USER settings are are profile dependent.  The user account you log in with should be fine with them... all other users won't get them.  If you want all other users to get them, you need to customize the DEFAULT profile, not the one you logged in as, per se:

See:
How to customize the default local user profile when you prepare an image of Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2

You have to make those changes in audit mode from the out-of-box menu. To get to audit mode hit ctrl + shift + F3 from the first screen you get to after a fresh install before answering any questions.

Hi,

I have created a small article about that and just copied for you. If your settings not appearing after deployment please make sure if you have used Administrator account (not administrator rights!! You must use Administrator account). Other essential is you must use Copy profile key in your answer file. If you forget one of them your customization will not work.
Please follow my article and check if you have missed any point.

1-Downloaded WAIK (Windows Automated Installation Kit) and installed (Free) On different computer, preferably your tech computer. Obviously you already done that :)
2-Install  your master computer and  first, activate Administrator account (as default its disabled-Right click on Computer icon and manage, local users and groups) and remove the initial admin account the one that you have essentially created at the end of the setup! Now you logged in to Administrator account. Install other softwares that you need. Customize desktop, gadgets and other softwares (Office especially-at first run it asking update settings which user will need administrator creditentials, its better to do it know so no user will be asked this question)
3-Now go back to other computer and create a folder under C: and name it (say WAIK) and copy the Install.vim and Install_Windows 7.clg files which located under sources to the WAIK folder you just created and run the WAIK. You do not need rest of CD components!!!
4-After finish preparation you will create an answer file (please watch the tutorial how to do this http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/ff657745.aspx) Please use your answer file name as myunattend as I prepared the last command according to that. Most important part here is Copy Profile command which is under Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup (right click and Specialize) and Copy profile must be TRUE.
5-copy that answer file under the Windows\System32\Sysprep\
6-Now you look your desktop and make sure everything customized as you wish and type the following command via cmd!! (Not via GUI)
C:\>Windows\System32\Sysprep  (Enter)
sysprep.exe /oobe /generalize /unattend:myunattend.xml  (Enter)

Hi teomcam: When I run the sysprep under the local Administrator account I get an error message saying a 'Fatal Error has occured' and I realised that that moment you run sysprep it disable the Administrator account and that is why I m getting the above error.

Any suggestions...Thanks

You have to run it under the Default user profile. If you have created user accounts already it will give you that fatal error?

I've never done it that way, but are there any other user accounts also on the machine? And has it been sysprepped before?

This Pc has been syspreped before and its now playingup. Let use another PC and I will let you know how I get on.

No problem. The fatal error comes from Sysprepping a computer more than once.

Hi,

If you wanna copy the profile sysprep and customization must be done under Administrator account!! If you use another admin acccount you will not be able to customize your profile! Fatal error might be caused by previous sysprep so first clean it please. Under sysprep folder there you'll see sysprep success file just delete it and place you sysrep file again.
