Why can't I activate Windows 7 on virtual machine?
Hi:
We have volume license of Windows 7 Ent. 32/64bit. We usually activate our Windows online.
But when I have installed Windows 7 Ent. x64bit on virtual box, it was activated successfully. Then I have installed updates and SP1 and took snapshot. Now when I am trying to activate it after restoring the snapshot. It is giving error.
Why could be the issue? Will it work after making it out of the box image via Sysprep?

No it is not giving error yet but showing 30 days to activate and if I try to activate it, gives error. I didn't rollback yet. By the way, what do you mean by rollback?
rollback is restore a snapshot.
So youve installed win 7 and installed sp1?

Yes... as I said that first I had installed OS and then updates including SP1... Afterwards, I took snapshot of it....
Now, when I restored that snapshop, it is not activated...

do you have internet connection on virtual machine? Can you be more specific about error msq
Yes, that's normal because it you've Restored the Snapshot, you've revwerse ALL the changes made since the Snapshot was created.
Rollback! You've rolled back the installation to the past, before the virtual compter was activated!
Why are you restoring the snapshot?

Infact, I'm preparing reference images of Win 7. I have already finalize an image voa sys prep. Now I need to create another image... I know, I can't do sysprep more than 3 times so therefore I took a snapshot...
Yes, Internet is available on VM...
What I think when I finalized this image, I will sysprep again so it may work after installation because sysprep does rearm as well... Any thoughts?

If you rollback the snapshot, it will need re-activating.
Activate and then Sysprep at the end, when you have completely finished your master golden image. Feel free to snapshot along the way, just in case you make a mistake and need to rollback or reverse changes, but make sure, you delete/comitt the changes of the snapshot at the end, not Restore, or you'll reverse all your changes.

This is question.... I can't activate it...
You cannot activate when?
ASKER
After restoring snapshot.
So after restoring the snapshot you cannot activate it?
Has the machine already been activated once before?
why are you restoring the snapshot? by restoring or reverting a snapshot, you are losing all the changed in the virtual machine, made after the snapshot has been created.

@hanccocka:
If we look at the above conversations, you have asked the same questions that I have answered multiple times so therefore now again I am replying:
Q1: why are you restoring the snapshot? by restoring or reverting a snapshot, you are losing all the changed in the virtual machine, made after the snapshot has been created.
Ans: I am working on reference images so therefore whenever I finalize an image, I need fresh image for next reference image. For example, if I have made image for computer labs, then I may need fresh image for staff and faculty. So therefore I took snapshot of the initial image.
So after restoring the snapshot you cannot activate it?
Ans: Yes, I cannot restore after restoration. It was activated before snapshot.

it could be sp1 related issue
can you check if you have this installed Windows 7 Activation Checker update (KB971033)
I would suggest that you do not activate the product.

I found the specified update and uninstalled it.
Still when I try to activate online, if gives error with this code 0x8007007B
We have volume license and it is activated via KMS.

Have you rolled back the workstation with the Snapshot?
