Exchange 2010 managed custom folder question

This is probably a stupid question, and I know I can research this, but I was hoping I could get an answer from someone who is using both methods of message handling.  What is the difference between archiving email in Exchange 2010 through the use of a managed custom folder and a retention policy?  They both seem to do the same thing, and I've not used either, so I must be missing something.  Can someone give me examples of why one would be used over the other, etc.?

    Accepted Solution

If you are running 2010, then you would want to use the retention policy
Managed folders are present in 2010 for backward compatibility with 2007 (and most likely will be phased out)

I believe managed folders were more robust and could allow more granular control, but the two have the same purpose
