Booking appointments in Sharepoint 2010

I was wondering if you could think of a way Sharepoint , if possible, could do scheduling/appointments.  It would need to be able to show the availability of office employees, show their skill level, what skill levels are available, cannot double book an employee for an appoint, cannot set an appt date in the past, etc…  I messed around with it and it seems like there would have to be some coding involved or a 3rd party application.  I have read some forums and they think that it is too much for Sharepoint.  Any thoughts?

i think this could be done without "coding" per se.  i.e.  with workflows.

have you looked through the "fab 40" templates to see if there's one that somewhat suits your needs?  i've used these as a starting point in the past... then modified or added workflows, etc

here's the descriptions:

note:  the Fab 40 were released for wss 3.0 / moss 2007.  the descriptions link i posted is from that release.  the first link i posted is to a site that has upgraded the templates for sharepoint 2010.  so, you do not want to download / use the templates from the second link i posted.  that's meant for reference only.  download the actual templates from the first link.

Would work flows work in an "outside" environment?  This setup would not have active directory users and a email system.  They would have to update a list with the employees and their times manually.

sure.  you don't have to have an email address in order to use a workflow.  think of a workflow as an automater...   if value X = 123, then do Y.

you may not even need to use workflows.  it depends.
