What is cron requests in CSV improved

Hi experts,
I was wondering if someone could help me understand a cron request using CSV improved.
I am reading this documentation here
http://www.csvimproved.com/csvi-virtuemart-documentation/f.a.q/cron-support-how-does-it-work.html

and from my understanding I will need to run this so that it  can be used to feed into some other system like GETPRICE...

Is that correct?

I hope someone can explain this to me so I understand what it can do?

Thanks,
A

CRON is a scheduler that runs on Linux/Unix systems. At a certain time it will execute a command. The time can be very specific like "execute this on 27th April 2011 at 11:00" or it can be very general like "Execute this at 11:00 every Thursday". The full details for cron can be viewed at Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cron

From the link you attached it seems that this host service (csvimproved) offers its users a script that will be executed via CRON. This will allow events to happen on a regular schedule. It seems that you edit the file they mention /administrator/components/com_csvivirtuemart/helpers/cron.php and put stuff in there. I have no idea what is in that file or its structure but I would not be surprised to find notes/advice in the form of comments inside the file.

The cronjob is just a job that runs at a scheduled time. It will do anything you program it to do.

It goes like this.....

1. Write a script to do some task
2. Test script works
3. Create an entry in the cron to run your task
4. Sit back and watch it execute an schedule

If you want to export XML to some other machine, then write a script to create the XML and post it to that remote machine, then create a cron entry and that script will run on a regular schedule doing whatever you programmed it to do.

What the script does is up to you. All the cronjob does is to run your script at a given time.

From the documentation in the link I sent, how long do you think it would take to set up?

It looks straightforward and they give examples of the options allowed to import/export. An hour or two should do it.

Your options here look more limited than a "normal" cron but that should make it simple to set up. Scroll right down to the very bottom of the page you linked to and they give examples of what options are supported and how to write the command.

Although this works for both import and export of data, I would try it with EXPORT first because that will not change the database. Once you are familiar with the procedures needed then doing an import should be easier to understand.

Always remember to keep a backup of the database from BEFORE attempting any imports
