Associate M-Box DB to PF DB

in exchange 2010, if we click on the Mailbox database/properties, the select Client Settings tab.
we can see "Default public folder database" and "\Default Offline Address Book"

1- what s the purpose of associating the Public folder database and OAB to a mailbox database?
If Mailbox database and PF database are not associated. what would be the impact?

2- in "\Default Offline Address Book", what is the back slash mean "\"

Thanks

Ok- if I understand one OAB can come from one Mailbox DB. Correct?

What about the association of Mailbox DB to a PF DB?

You may not worry on both rather you are in in co-existense organization either with Exchange 2003 or Exchage 2010.

If you have a Exchange 2003 oraganization with PF, you have to use mentioned option to set that as PF tree

same here in OAB too, multiple OAB and need deafult set to exchange 201 user can be done using Clent settings...

This is due to........

In Exchange Server 2010, public folders are an optional feature. If all client computers in your organization are running Microsoft Outlook 2010 or Office Outlook 2007, there are no dependencies on public folders for features such as free and busy information and offline address book (OAB) downloads. Instead of using public folders for OAB downloads and free and busy information, in Exchange 2010, these features are serviced by the Autodiscover service, the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service, and the Microsoft Exchange File Distribution service.

I have Outlook 2003 too.
My initial question is to understand

1- what s the purpose of associating the Public folder database and OAB to a mailbox database?
If Mailbox database and PF database are not associated. what would be the impact?

2- in "\Default Offline Address Book", what is the back slash mean "\"

I believe I managed to understand why you associate a specific OAB to a specific Mailbox DB, I guess that way only users located in that specific Mailbox will be able to see the specified  OAB  when they are offline.
if the OAB is a customized OAB, I mean it is is not the Default OAB which is usually derived from the default GAL, then users will be able to see both the customized OAB and the Default OAB.

Anyone to confirm my statement, whether I am right or wrong??

thanks
