DHCP on SBS or SonicWALL is a Best Practice.

We are running DHCP on an SBS 2k3. Is it preferred or a best practice to run it on the SBS box or on our firewall (SonicWALL TZ 170). 15 users w/AD.

Thanks.

It's best to run DHCP on the SBS. DHCP on SBS integrates with DNS on the SBS and you'll see better performance with this setup. Is there a reason you're thinking of using DHCP on the sonicwall?

There is an exception, however, if you are using the WLAN interface for wireless users, then the sonicwall will provide IP addresses.  However, you can configure the WLAN zone to use the LAN as an IP subnet.

Hi digitap!

Just wanted to know. Also having problems w/DHCP Server on SBS disappearing (http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/SBS_Small_Business_Server/Q_26980865.html) and seemed like SonicWALL was more stable. It also related to the running VPN through it as well.

OK, I see. Well, the disappearing DHCP on the SBS seems to be a different issue. I wrote a EE article on how to configure the sonicwall to provide IP to GVC users. You might review that and let me know what you think.

Great article but again the SonicWALL in question is not Enhanced only STD.

Sorry. I didn't see that in the question anywhere. That can create some challenges there.

My appologies, i thought you remembered me from before...I had a similair question w/VPN asking if i could setup CFS exclusion on my VPN IP.

I know, i am almost thinking of just purchasing them w/enhanced by default!

I do now, sorry. The newer appliances only come with enhanced.
