internet explorer compatibility

A while back I thought I remembered seeing a javascript or PHP snippet for Internet Explorer compatibility. The code determined the user's browser information, and if it was Internet Explorer (no matter which version) it would tell the browser to render it as though it were IE 6..or IE7.

That way different pages wouldn't have to be designed for each version of IE. It would just be a sort of.....If not IE, render this normal looking page, and... if IE, render this IE page, but make IE9 render it like it would if it were IE7

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
