Are you running the R2 version of W2K8? I haven't heard (yet) if that is indeed an issue with installing VMware Server, but it could be since Server is at its end-of-life (in July) and VMware may not have made it compatible with the newest versions of W2K8 Server.

Try changing the compatibility mode of the Program to WIndows XP/2003 and try re-installing, although this make work, it's likely unsupported.

*VMware Server was declared End Of Availability on January 2010. Support will be limited to Technical Guidance for the duration of the support term.

End of General Support - 2011/06/30

(whatever that means!) - did users ever log calls with VMware for it!!!?

Ok..a bit more info...a couple threads I've seen (http://communities.vmware.com/message/1465048 and http://communities.vmware.com/thread/268503) state you can run Server on 2K8 R2. So, now I'm stumped as to what it could be....

...unless you're running Core version?
is it a "special" version of 2k8 like SBS or a domain controller?
