What is the best way to test HA on a production server? I want to test this and see exactly waht happens. I have a IT server that I can test with.

pull the power out, or it may be kinder to remove the network cable.

if all is well, the virtual machines should startup automatically on the remaining host server in the cluster.

Turn off DRS.  vMotion all but 1 server off of the host you want to use in the test.  Pull the power or the network connection from that server.

If I pull the power how will HA work? does it just try to restart a VM

Larry LarmeuManaging DirectorCommented:
It will power the VM on on another host assuming it is configured correctly.

yes, if will power-on the VM on another Server. If that's what you want to test!

Thats HA!

That should work, all VM's are on the same vSwitch and I have tested vMotion and it works great....

HubmanAuthor Commented:
So to truely test HA I should vmotion all VM's except one to another host...then pull the plug and see if it comes up on another host?
Thanks

To truly test HA, it should have been done before production! and with VMs on (these could be TEST VMs, and not production VMs to avoid damage!)

and you need to pull the plug, that's what would happen, if the server's power supply failed, or UPS or Generator stopped working!

vMotion is not HA.

I agree about testing before production; however, all is in production now. I can make test VM's to test with. Yes I want to test HA and see it work....not vMotion. I have tested vMotion alot

So move all VMs off the server, put some TEST VMs on the box, and pull the plug! (remove network cable!).

They should autostart on the other server automatically after x mins!

Larry LarmeuManaging DirectorCommented:
No one said vMotion was HA.  The point of the vMotion was to make sure there are no production VMs on the host before you pull the plug.  You can put whatever amount of test machines on the host you'd like before you pull the plug.

HubmanAuthor Commented:
Yep, i will use vMotion to move the production VM's to another host....then test
