Unable to see other computers in the same workgroup

Hello,

I have a small problem in my Server 2003 after I demoted it from domain to workgroup
I'm unable to see other computers in the same workgroup,  can anyone help with that?

did you remove the clients from the domain first?

check the workgroup name on the server and clients to make sure they match.

Hello ,

Thanks for your reply, no I don't remember doing that but when I check Services
NetLogin is not started  when I start it, it starts then stops right away

If the environment is going to be move off a domain to a workgroup I always demote the client PCs first so I do not know if you will have difficulty with that but I would remove the clients from the domain.

Hi Vikrantambhore

Don't worry about Net Logon service that is only used in a Domain Environment.

To troubleshoot firstly you'll want to make sure you can still ping the computer names.
Try pinging them by Name and by IP Address.

Next try going start run and typing \\Computername to see if you can browse to it that way

If that works and the computers still aren't showing up in the Network Neighborhood then you need to make sure that the clients are definitely removed from the domain.

Right Click My Computer, Properties,  Computer Name Tab, Does it say Domain or Workgroup and is it the same as the servers Workgroup.

Thats not good then.
I would be looking at firewalls blocking the connections.
Are the clients Windows 7?
Also try ping from the clients back to the Server.

it is saying Firewall is not running on Server 2003 because a service ICS is not running
My Client is Win XP & Firewall is Off

Can you ping anything at all from the server? You may have an issue either with physical NW connection or with the NIC settings. Can you do a comparison of the addresses on the server & on a couple of clients to ensure that they are on the same subnet? Can you ping one client PC from another client PC?
