Exchange 2003 Server smtp stops working

I have an Exchange 2003 Server which the SMTP stopped working. I have uninstalled and reinstalled smtp and it started working(ie i can telnet into it now).  But now Email is disappearing into the never never. Spam Service is showing mail as being delivered.....but nothing shows up. Mail sent from Outlook leaves outbox.....but never arrives at destination. Internal does not work either.  Now the smtp service has stopped working again.  I am currently coping the priv & pub files just in case. Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

When you say you ininstalled SMTP and re-installed I take it you mean you did this from add/remove programs? or you deleted and re-created the SMTP virtual server in exchange? or both?

When you say EXBPA.....do you mean a connectivity test. I don't see a selection for Error report.

Try delete SMTP Virtual Server, stop Exchange services, restart exchange services, create new SMTP Virtual Server as per http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/ee/transform.aspx?ProdName=Exchange&ProdVer=6.5.6940.0&EvtID=1018&EvtSrc=MSExchangeMU&LCID=1033

There is no option to remove the Default SMTP Virtual Server.

I have been doing some research for you. in exchange 2000 there was the ability to re-install the Default SMTP virtual server. this is not available in Exchange 2003. However the same issues apply. if you uninstall SMTP from add/remove programs it breakd the links in the metabase that are put there by the exchange installation.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822939 goes into the issues in detail. You may need to reinstall exchange with Locate the Setup\i386 folder on the Exchange installation CD, and then type setup.exe /reinstall.

Though I would see if somone else has some other ideas before you resort to that.

Unfortunately none of the solutions corrected the problem. I ended up replacing the entire system which is OK, because it was over 10 years old anyway.
