How to convert dual cpu 2003 vm to single cpu

I have a 2003 vm that was created with 2 cpu's. But I need to downgrade it to a single cpu.

How can I downgrade the os to 1 cpu.

I tried this but it didn't work:

Did you see the VMware Communities article it references?

Generally if you just change to a single vCPU you shouldn't have any problems.  I have had to do this for several customers with no adverse affects.  If you see issues you can always change it back to 2 vCPU

If you are using VMWARE for managing your VMs, then use the vmware converter standalone client tool.

So when you've removed the processor from the VM properties, what exactly happened!
