good day everyone,

I have a co-worker who encrypted his entire hard drive and is now not able to access it, he has the recovery key and the others but they will not work. he gets the following message:

bitlocker drive encryption failed to recover from an abruptly terminated conversion. this could be due to either all conversion logs being corrupted or the media being write-protected

Log Warning: 0x80000029
Lock Volume: 0x80070005
Failed To Open: e: '0x80070005

Just wondering if there's any way around this in order to access the drive?

thank you.

You can try the BitLocker Repair Tool located here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=4ffd0d16-a51b-48b1-9042-ae1fb2de40c6&displaylang=en

If that doesn't work for you, then it's possible that you've permanently lost access to your data.
If the encryption process was stopped before it was able to complete, it's possible that BitLocker didn't get the chance to write the decryption blocks and that's why your recovery key is not working.

sorry that did not work, the tool when trying to install it gives a message that says:

the update not apply to your system

we tried it on a windows 7 and vista machine and we get the same message, any idea?

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

I'm sorry, they discontinued support for the tool after Vista.
(Just a shot in the dark, but have you tried installing the drive into another machine? Either one running Vista, or one that could use compatibility mode to emulate Vista?)

The only real option that MS supports now is the command line recovery using:
repair-bde <source drive> <target drive> -rp <yourkey>
(But I believe that was the process you were describing above that failed.

Other than that, I don't believe there is a way to recover that data beyond sending the drive to a specialty lab. And even that would be an expensive shot-in-the-dark with the possibility of no results. :(
