Windows 7 Network shares stop working after restart for remote VPN computer

I have a system which is logging on remotely through a vpn.  I have setup desktop shortcuts of network shares.  The shares stop working intermittently throughout the day and when the system is restarted.  When the shares stop working I get an error.  Cannot find location. This is a windows 7 computer.  To fix it I to go to run, and type in the network path of the share and within windows explorer change "work offline" to "work online".  How I can I get it to work immediately when the system is signed onto the VPN and not have to constantly switch it to work online.

Thanks

It almost seems like the VPN device is unable to maintain a connection (cause could be loss of connection, lack of bandwidth, not enough processing power on the VPN device, power saving mode, etc...)

What device are you using?  What style of VPN: pptp, etc...?

I was wondering about that, since in explorer I saw (slow connection).  It is a watchguard software VPN.  We have the hardware on location and have not had this issue with other people using the vpn.  I can have her restart her router or maybe check in with her cable company.  Would that effect it not working after she establishes a vpn connection through her watchguard after a restart.  Shouldnt it come straight up, work , and then fail? ....maybe its just a bad connection.

Watchguard is running on the affected system?  I would use process explorer to monitor when the software comes up and then keep running netstat -a -o on a command prompt periodically to monitor out bound connections (take note of what the PID - process identifer number is).

If you are not familiar with process explorer http://bit.ly/klejOy
netstat is usually included with MS OS...

I cycled the router and modem and no problems since.
