Visio 2010 hangs when printing to Officejet 6500

I've run into a strange problem, and I'm not sure there's much hope.
Checking here to see if anyone's had this issue.

When I print to this USB-connected Officejet 6500 from Visio 2010, the application hangs and goes into a Not Responding state for 40 - 60 seconds, then prints.
If I choose a different printer, such as a networked laserjet, it prints instantly and does not freeze at all from what I can see.

HP says to print it to XPS file then open the XPS in Internet Explorer and print it.
I wonder if you can just open the VSD in Internet Explorer (using the Visio Viewer add-on) and print it with no freezing...

That's HP's suggestion, huh? If we're on the workaround-type sentiment, then I think that saving the file as PDF (a native function available in Visio 2010 now) and then opening up the PDF content with your PDF viewer might be a better option altogether.

But as an aside, I would normally suggest reinstalling the printer drivers and trying experimenting with PCL and PS drivers for this printer accordingly (if we were to try to address the issue without workarounds).

Yeah that was their workaround, since they state there's a known issue with Visio and that printer's driver.
Unfortunately I do not see any different PCL or PS drivers available like most printer manufacturer's websites have.

Well, with that and no offer for a solution (whether extant or in the works), I guess workarounds are what we have. I personally would opt for the PDF option I noted... but only you running both workaround scenarios to assess which is preferable will be the telling factor.
