backup imap emails

I have 2 notebooks one with Outlook 07, the other Outlook 2010 using imap email accounts. Today, the email server is being changed over to a new host, so we need to back up all existing emails. I'm sure I know the answer - just get my head into gear this morning. What is the best approach?

Create a local email folder, copy everything into it. Connect to new host, copy it all back. If you can connect to new and old at the same time you can copy direct and save a step.

I have about 65 folders and more than 10gb of old files - is copying within Outlook really the best solution?
Technically your outlook already has them downloaded, so the copy to a local pst will go quick. It's the upload to the new mailserver that will take awhile. Maybe you don't need to upload old stuff to the new server?

Okay, now I'm in a heap of trouble. I exported the outlook file to my hard drive and it deleted all the emails that were exported. Left lots of other folders with old emails. When I tried to import the files, it goes through all the steps, appears to be bringing back all the folders but they have disappeared - nowhere to be found! What has happened?
That's not what I said to do at all. Does your other computer still have all the original emails?

Well you took too long to reply and the Microsoft knowledge base said to use export. So I figured that would COPY the emails/folders not DELETE them. The folders look as if they are being imported back in but I can't find them. All the mail from before Nov last year are still there - they were imported from an old notebook. It is all the mail since that date which has disappeared. I just can't figure it out.
