Cisco IP phones/expansion modules - button functionality/configuration

Some basic/simple questions about functionality that can be assigned to buttons on Cisco (and probably any IP phone vendor) phones and expansion modules.

Looking at the 7915/7916 sidecars for certain Cisco IP phones, they list the functionality for any button allowing a 1) directory number, 2) line number or 3) speed dial.  

Quite simply, what's the difference between the three (for an IP/voice newbie) - I view a sidecar as providing presence (line busy or not) info, and the ability to transfer an incoming call to that extension.  If I'm receiving a call, and transfer it to an extension on the sidecar, is that not the same as a speed dial?  And what's the difference between a button being assigned a "directory number" vs. a "line number"?    So...

1) Please specifically explain the difference between a button configured for a 1) DN, 2) line number and 3) speed dial.

2) Can any button on any Cisco phone be configured to provide any of the three functions above?

Can any of the other buttons on the IP phone itself serve any of these functions as well?

A directory number is the same as a line number. If you have 5 DNs on you module, people can call you.
If you additionally have 5 speed dials, those are numbers you can call.
If you get a call, press the transfer softkey, then hit one of the speed dials, you will be transferring the call to whichever number the SD points to.

Your sidecar will provide you presence if you configure BLF speed dials.

Any round button on the right of the screen or on the expansion mod. can be a speed dial or a directory number. Or even a Phone Service if you wish. Many things can be configured to a button.

The buttons bellow your screen are the softkeys, those are hard coded to the predetermined built-int functionalities (Device > Device Settings > Softkey templates)

Thank you for the feedback - good information.  One follow-up question for clarity, though:

I was looking at the datasheet for the 7916 sidecar - http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/voicesw/ps6788/phones/ps379/data_sheet_c78-468673.pdf

and it includes the following:

"You can program the buttons on each Cisco Unified IP Phone Expansion Module 7916 as a directory number, line key, or speed-dial key, much like on the Cisco Unified IP Phone 7962G, 7965G, and 7975G models. Buttons used as a directory-number (DN) or shared line keys are illuminated, allowing easy identification of call state (Table 1)."

So it makes a distinction between directory numbers and line keys.  Any ideas?

Hey, one more follow-up just to make sure...  I was reading through the Presence link you provided (for BLF speed dials).  BLF (and everything else labeled as a "Presence" feature in this doc) can be tied to speed dial buttons without actually having the Cisco Unified Presence Server (CUPS) installed, correct?

In other words, you don't need to have Cisco's actual Presence solution rolled out to use BLFs, correct?
