Heap

I have linux server with 5GB RAM.

I try to set JAVA_OPTS with this command :
export JAVA_OPTS="-XX:MaxPermSize=640m -Xms512m -Xmx3072m -Dalfresco.home=/opt/alfresco -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote"

But it's giving Error message:
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Could not create the Java virtual machine.

Although my physical memory is 5 GB RAM, how to solve it? And the memory utilization is still low.

Set the following setting in Jboss and share the status :

-Xms512m
-Xmx3328m
-XX:PermSize=128m
-XX:MaxPermSize=768m
-XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC
-XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled
-XX:+CMSPermGenSweepingEnabled
-Dsun.rmi.dgc.client.gcInterval=3600000
-Dsun.rmi.dgc.server.gcInterval=3600000

you need to add more memory to the box
just because you have 5gb of ram doesn't mean you have 5gb available to allocate to the vm

You'll also need to be running 64 bit java to use that much RAM

Probably you are using the 32-bit JVM, which doesn't support this large of a heapsize.

Isn't it easy just to vary parameters and see when it complains?
