How to recover the root password in mysql

I have server with RHEL5, and mysql which contains valuable data, but I forgot the root pasword, packages installed related to mysql are:
mysql-5.0.77-3.el5
php-mysql-5.1.6-24.el5_4.5
mysql-5.0.77-3.el5
perl-DBD-MySQL-3.0007-2.el5
mysql-server-5.0.77-3.el5
mysql-connector-odbc-3.51.26r1127-1.el5
libdbi-dbd-mysql-0.8.1a-1.2.2
MySQL-python-1.2.1-1

Can someone please guide me on a safe way how to recover my root password without loosing my data nor deleting other users nor reseting their passwords?
