GPS how to calculate a lap time

I'm working on a micro controller project that has GPS. Once a pick a starting/ending point. How do I decide when a lap is over?

    when the GPS says that you've done a certain distance (greater than 10m) and are in almost the same place as the starting point

    So.... pick a start/end waypoint

    travel at least X distance

    When current location is within (some small distance) from start/end calculate laptime.
