We recently setup an Ubuntu server as a VM on a 2008 R2 hyperv server. We are able to ping the ubuntu server from any machine on the same subnet. If we try to ping the ubuntu server from another subnet on the same network it fails. We are able to ping our windows machines that sit on the same subnet as the ubuntu server from  the other subnets. Obviously we are missing something can anyone shed some light.

It sounds like your gateway on the Ubuntu server may be wrong. Can you provide more information?  Can you ping from the Ubuntu servers to other servers?  You filed this under DNS when you ping the server from the machiens that aren't working does the name resolve to an IP address?  Are you trying to ping by machine name or FQDN?

We turned dhcp on let it grab an ip address and we were able to set it to that as a static address and it is now reachable across all of our subnets.

Sorry didn't see I had added to DNS as well, not sure why but as I stated above we let dhcp give it an address set that as static and it is now working.
