It depends on what you want the image for. If the server is old, you may wish to virtualize your Windows 2000 server and put on a VMware ESX machine. You could use VMware Converter to do that. That is one approach.

Windows AIK contains a free file-based imaging tool called imagex.  Use imagex to capture the contents of your Windows 2000 drive to a network share, external drive, or even the same drive.

Search for WAIK on www.microsoft.com/downloads.  I realize it's a large download, but it has what you need and a whole lot more.

Here's the link for WAIK if you have Windows 7:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=696dd665-9f76-4177-a811-39c26d3b3b34

Once you install it go to the start menu and find Windows Automated Installation Kit.  Open the documentation folder and launch "Step-by-Step - Basic Windows Deployment for IT Pros".  Go down to "Step 3: Creating Bootable Windows PE Media".  It that will walk you through creating a bootable CD with imagex on it.

Boot to the CD and run "imagex /?" to get the command syntax.  It will be something like this:

imagex /capture c: d: "my Windows 2000 drive C backup" /verify

Drive D could be your external hard drive or USB key.

It takes a little effort if you aren't familiar with this stuff, but if you aren't then you should get familiar with it.
Actually on the start menu it gets installed as "Microsoft WIndows AIK".
Then once you get your hands dirty with that you can graduate to MDT (Microsoft Deployment Toolkit).  It's also free and uses WAIK under the hood to do full-featured imaging and deployment of Windows.  When you're ready to dive in to that ,burn a bunch of time, and have loads of fun at the same time go to

I have succesfully used www.hdclone.com for migrating Windows 2000 server onto a new disk. They have a free version http://www.miray.de/products/sat.hdclone.html#free which also allows you to save a disk into an image file, so that you can restore that image onto another disk (if you need it).

I saw nothing for hdclone that installs on win2000. The freebie did not install when i tried.

Zouleous,
Is there a link for the win2000 imagex?
imagex is part of the WAIK that I linked above.  I see no reason why you can't use imagex to capture a Windows 2000 drive.  Follow the instructions I posted above to download WAIK for Windows 7 and install it to a different machine that has one of the required OS's listed.  Use the WAIK to create a bootable CD with imagex on it that you can put in your Windows 2000 machine and capture the contents of the drive.
