Help understanding hosted or API payment integration in Virtuemart

Hi There,
I was hoping someone could help me understand what is involved in setting up a St George payment gateway integration in Virtuemart.

I just need the general steps so I know where to start.

Do I Need to set up with eway?
Thanks,A

So the shared option would be a better one really in terms of managing security?

If you wanted to create a payment gateway to your bank do you have to use eway on virtuemart?
I think the shared option is the simpler and better option if you or your client is worried about their ability to maintain security over time. I do some work for Associations and small businesses and prefer to use the shared option with them.

Eway is just one payment gateway service but it is widely used by the Australian banks. I am not conversant with other ones that St George supports.
Does this link explain whether they would use eway?

Wouldn't Virtuemart only use a few payment gateways also, like eway?
VM has a reasonably large collection as is evidenced by the attached list of gateways from one of my sites. Can't tell you much about what St George uses - no experience with them. I suspect this is a make direct contact with them question. User generated image
SO the first steps are really to contact St George to see what they will use to integrate with Virtuemart?
I just think they are unlikely to know that particular shopping cart and I was hoping this link would somehow tell me what I need to do with virtuemart to connect to them?

Ok I am starting to understand this now!
When you say:
The VM/eway or other  payment gateway handles the connection and notification back for you. A quick search on St George payment gateways leads me to believe that it works with many.

What do you mean that it works with many?
