Help understanding hosted or API payment integration in Virtuemart

Hi There,
I was hoping someone could help me understand what is involved in setting up a St George payment gateway integration in Virtuemart.

I just need the general steps so I know where to start.

Do I Need to set up with eway?
Thanks,A

Not sure exactly what you are asking, but hope this helps.

EWay offers both shared and hosted solutions. Their shared service takes the user from your site to
eWay's secure server and then returns them back to you with a payment success or otherwise notification. So you need to prepare your clients that they will be going to a secure third party site to give their credit card details, probably after they have already given some details on your site.

The hosted solution has you obtaining the credit card details on your site and these being passed in the background to eWay which returns the payment success or otherwise notification. Advantage is that you are in control of the whole user interface. Disadvantage is that you need to both handle the security/encryption (SSL etc) and convince your users that you do this professionally.

Not greatly experienced with the VM configuration of eWay but think the relevant setting is the payment class name as per the attached image (ps_eway vs ps_eway3rd).

So the shared option would be a better one really in terms of managing security?

If you wanted to create a payment gateway to your bank do you have to use eway on virtuemart?

I think the shared option is the simpler and better option if you or your client is worried about their ability to maintain security over time. I do some work for Associations and small businesses and prefer to use the shared option with them.

Eway is just one payment gateway service but it is widely used by the Australian banks. I am not conversant with other ones that St George supports.

Does this link explain whether they would use eway?

Wouldn't Virtuemart only use a few payment gateways also, like eway?

VM has a reasonably large collection as is evidenced by the attached list of gateways from one of my sites. Can't tell you much about what St George uses - no experience with them. I suspect this is a make direct contact with them question. List of VM payment methods

SO the first steps are really to contact St George to see what they will use to integrate with Virtuemart?
I just think they are unlikely to know that particular shopping cart and I was hoping this link would somehow tell me what I need to do with virtuemart to connect to them?

That link seems more designed for developers who are writing their own gateways rather than for those seeking to use already constructed shopping carts/gateways.

The VM/eway or other  payment gateway handles the connection and notification back for you. A quick search on St George payment gateways leads me to believe that it works with many.

Have a look at http://www.eway.com.au/about-eway-payment-service-provider/eway-explained/connected-payment-banks.aspx.

Ok I am starting to understand this now!
When you say:

What do you mean that it works with many?

I meant  that StG appears likely to be compatible with many shopping carts/gateways - though I did not look for or identify others that are on the VM gateway list.

Most of my experience comes from clients who already had or were setting up an eWay interface for their online transactions so I have not had to research other alternatives. eWay is fine in my experience.
