Best format for viewing video on websites

Hi,

I'm looking to embed a few screen-captures which I made with CamStudio. I have the option to output as AVI or Flash. I'm making the videos as tutorials for a project and my clients don't have admin rights on their machines. I don't know if they can view flash and what's more, if iPhone/iPad doesn't support it, I'd rather use something else anyway.

Can someone point me in teh right direction with this as I don't know where to begin. I'd also like to annotate it as I'm not sure sound will be an option on the client's machine either. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate, is there something native that will do this job nicely?

Thanks,
John

Hai,

The best way to view the video files - steps below

1) .flv file
2) Load the .flv file into the flash object script
3) Can have different skin on the flash player

This will be the best way to load the video objects and make the view better more.

OK, thanks for the replies. I'm looking for an option which doesn't rely on Flash though. I was looking at Flowplayer which will allow an mp4 too but I'm thinking to be viewable by those without Flash the format should be a mpg or avi. Does anyone know of any nice containers/wrappers for those?

Use an mp4 file with the H264 codec for compression. Doing a simple Javascript check to see if the browser has the Flash plugin will tell you if you should instead use the HTML5 <video> object, which the iPad/iPhone support.

Either way, if iOS device support is desired, you should NOT be using FLV as your format.
