Windows 7 freezes when playing some video files - but not DVD
Posted on 2011-04-29
Hello, I have a pc with Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit. It freezes up when playing AVI files. I've used VLC (default player) as well as Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center to playback the problem AVI files, and it freezes every time. I can play a physical DVD with VLC for hours and no freezing. I can play other file types with any of the player software (mpg, F4V, M4V, MP4 etc.) and it doesn't freeze. But it seems the higher resolutions ones also freeze, ie: had a 1080p MP4 that froze up.
The video card is an nVidia GeForce 7900 GTX, using the driver that Windows installed when I installed the OS. What's weird is that I can play the problematic files on a different PC with the same graphics card and default Windows driver just fine. However the boxes have different motherboards.
Any ideas on what the quirk is?
