I.E/GPO Preferences

All, just need some clarification

I believe that...

If I copy a GPO my production GPO (to test) and change the I.E Maintance tab from preference back to maintaiance mode by the reset function then it will only affect that copied GPO; its not a *global* setitng is it, thus not affecting my production GPO?

I have set up a GPMC on a 2008 server (I am still on a 2003 domain though) I can then just use the reset I.E setitngs on maint mode to set a few setitngs and then use the new GPO preferences to set up all the setitngs that I used to have to do by setitng the I.E. admin to pref mode....Thus using I.E maint mode only on the GPO and using GP pref mode for all other setitngs? (I am using I.E8)
are these the correct assumptions?

Yes, it should affect only copy GPO but test in a lab first. You never know how things behave & it always better to continue in production with system state backup.

Thanks, what about the assumption on using IE maint mode on the main GPO section and the new GP prefernces mode...

I haven't tested this but it should not be any issue, still i stress on testing than being hypothetical as assumption is just imagination.
