I am using freehand 10 and cannot open a .ps or ai vector file to edit outlines etc. I used to be able to do that in earlier versions. any suggestions?

You might end up having to go to the Adobe forum to find an answer. I pains me to send someone out side of EE, but sadly, there are not many Freehand users around here and as much as I loved it, I gave up on it years ago.

If you don't get an answer in a reasonable amount of time, make a comment and then accept your own comment as the best answer. You will be refunded your points.

However, to make yourself loved by the EE community, if you do find an answer elsewhere, post it here so that others can find it in the future. (You can still get a point refund, but that way you will get a refund and our gratitude!)

Since Macromedia and Adobe used to compete head to head they would always tweak their file formats so you couldn't open the newest version anywhere but their newest program. So, what we used to do is, in Illustrator, export the file to a legacy Illustrator version that's lower than the Freehand version. Unless there's elements that use some new bell or whistle, like gradient mesh for instance, then you should be fine. One caveat would be to make sure you convert your type to outlines in Illustrator first since Freehand handles type in a completely different way.

Let me know if this helps.

olliefelde: probably has the correct answer, however I believe that since CS2 (Illustrator 12), this kind of approach has been hamstrung, as this is the period Adobe was buying out Macromedia and trying to kill of Freehand.

Freehand MX won't be able to open the Ai files unless they are actually resaved in the specific version ie

Using CS2,CS3,CS4 or CS5/5.5 to save back to save as  Illustrator .AI version 8 or 10 version (optimal and stable file version) and then actually open in AI 8 or 10 and resave.

This is impossible if you don't have those legacy versions available.

You maybe able to PDF the files and save as Acobat vesion 1.4 (v4) files (outlining text prior to coversionn) and open thos files in Freehand 10/MX
