Macbook error

My new Macbook (Snow Leopard, 2009 model) had its first hardware crash today. A greyness fell down the screen like a falling curtain, and when it got to the bottom all activity stopped (I was on a Skype call at the time, which kept going until the grey color hit the bottom). A message said I had to hit the power button to restart the machine, so I did, and then everything came back up. The error message is included below. What does it mean and what should I do in response?

You can't do anything actually. If  this panic window will appear more than once in several months, try to reinstall system from scratch (you backup your data, don't you?). If it would not help, it would be a time for a in warranty repair

This solution has helped others facing same problem using Skype - hope it is of some use?

I will try that and report back. Thanks!

If you were using an external handset/headset, try Skype without it.  There could be a hardware issue there.
Also check you have done all the latest system updates and driver updates for any peripherals you use.

Owen RubinPrincipalCommented:
I am not sure it had anything to do with Skype actually. What you saw is a Kernel Panic. When the Mac's Unix kernel catches an error that might cause data damage, or a security error, it throws a panic, and stops the machine to prevent data loss or security issues.

From the dump above, there was a "page fault' error.

(From Wikipedia): A page fault is a trap to the software raised by the hardware when a program accesses a page that is mapped in the virtual address space, but not loaded in physical memory...The operating system tries to handle the page fault by making the required page accessible at a location in physical memory or kills the program in case it is an illegal access.

So, something in one of the programs (could have been anything running) tried to access a page of memory that was out of bounds, and threw this fault. I see them on occasion. After rebooting, they seldom return. It may have been a memory error, a program bug, or some combination of the same.

If they keep returning, you may have bad memory, a program that needs to be reinstalled, or a system error.

I use Skype all day long and do not see this problem. If you think it is Skype, remove and reinstall.

For now, there is really nothing to do.

This is the most plausibly correct comment, as far as I can tell.
