missing icons, folders & programs in xp

I have a machine here running windows xp sp3.
All the icons have gone from the desktop.
Start-All programss says empty. My computer shows C: drive, but there is nothing in it . Not even the windows folder. Running the DIR command for C: says file not found.
Control panel works but admin tools folder is empty
All user's documents have disappeared
User has AVG installed, this seems to work & will scan computer showing the path of the files it is scanning,
System restore starts from the C/prompt and but just hangs,
SFC /scannow works but doesn't change anything, likewise Chkdsk. Starting in Safe mode makes no difference
I attached the HDD from this computer to another as the D: drive
This shows the drive as having used space but when I open the drive it is empty, however Right clicking the drive allows me to scan it with Malwarebytes, which runs through properly, again showing the path of the files it is scanning.

I hope someone can shed some light on this, I have never seen it before

Thanks jeff

Since you have it slaved currently, try showing all hidden and system files/folders. You should hopefully be able to see content afterward.

Folder Options > View tab. Make sure the Show hidden files, folders, and drives radio button is enabled and uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).

Run the following command in command prompt (cmd)

    sfc /scannow

To access Folder Options in WinXP, go to Start > Control Panel > Folder Options. From Win7, Start (Windows Orb) > type in Folder Options in the Search bar > select the Folder Options link that appears above.

Or you need to start xp in safe mode by pressing F8 and remove AVG.

Then, restart xp to see whether the problem is gone.

If still no go, start the computer from xp setup cd and latch xp recovery console to run sfc /scannow command.

Download and run Unhide.exe to remove the hidden flags on files and folders.
