RSS WebPart Problem

I'm using the RSS viewer webpart in 2010. I have tried a couple of news feeds - one that I was given to use, and to make sure, another business report. Both of these are accessible on the web and in another Non-SP RSS viewer, as well as directly through IE on the SharePoint Server.

No matter what I give it as a URL, I get the following error:
"ProtocolError occured trying to complete the request. The server returned a status code of : InternalServerError"

All I'm doing is entering the url in the text box when editing the webpart - am I missing something?

Our site does have Windows authentication - all authenticated users can view our site - it's an intranet.
The way I understood it was that you needed Kerberos if the News Feed itself was an authenticated news feed, which it is not.

also, we do not have a proxy server.

Can anyone direct me to a step by step, full knowledge article on the RSS feed web part - what it will do and what it can't do, as well as how to implement it.
Is the news feed external?
Yes - external to this site - not external to our campus network, technically
