is there a free utility that I can use to see the ip addresses and devices on my lan?

hi experts,

I'm trying to find an ip address of a switch that I have but I'm having a hard time. Is there a tool i can use to scan my lan and give me list of ip addresses and systems?

You can you this network scanner.

in the settings there is an option that you can set so It can scan with ARP instead of the commonly used ICMP ping. ARP will guarantee that if there is a device and it's on it will return something. You don't have to be on the same IP subnet.

There are quite a number of different scanners out there.
I personaly use NMAP/Zenmap.   http://nmap.org/
You can set numerous scanning options.

There are a number that are good.  I personally use Spiceworks.  It gives you that, plus there are many additional features built in as well.  If all you want is basic IP information though, it may be overkill...

There is also a good chance that the switch in question has an out of band/subnet IP address, and will possibly require a massive amount of effort w/ most standard tools.  Do you have any way to console into the switch?
