How to ping gateway address?

In Windows Vista, I use Remote Desktop Connection to connect with a remote machine.  I configure a TS Gateway.  

My RDC works fine.  But if I ping the TS Gateway server domain name (as entered in the TS Gateway settings), I get time outs.  If I tracert to it, I get timeouts starting on the 8th hop.

How is it I can connect fine through RDC but cannot ping or tracert this gateway?

It is very much possible that ports for ping (ICMP) and tracert service are blocked.

If that is the case, how does the first line of ping output the gateway IP address?  Is that just a simple domain lookup done by the ping app before actual pinging starts?

Yes, the ping utility includes a resolver which lookups the ip address of the domain to be ping.
